To My Future Children, I am writing this journal for you so that you will always know our heritage and where you ancestors came from. We may be United States citizens but our culture and homeland is elsewhere. Somewhere I am hoping you will one day visit. Here is a little bit of history about our dear homeland. The island of Puerto Rico (formerly Porto Rico) is the most easterly of the Greater Antilles group of the West Indies island chain. Located more than a thousand miles southeast of Miami, Puerto Rico is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by the Virgin Passage (which separates it from the Virgin Islands), on the south by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the Mona Passage (which separates it from the†¦show more content†¦(Green). New York City became a major focal point for Puerto Rican migration. Between 1951 and 1957 the average annual migration from Puerto Rico to New York was over 48,000. Many settled in East Harlem, located in upper Manhattan between 116th and 145th streets, east of Central Park. Because of its high Latino population, the district soon came to be known as Spanish Harlem. (Green). Pretty interesting! Beings that I am in Manhattan myself as well as my parents. The religion that we call our own is the Catholic religion. In addition to the holy days observed by the Catholic church, Puerto Ricans celebrate several other days that hold particular significance for them as a people. For instance, El Dia de las Candelarias, or candlemas, is observed annually on the evening of February 2; people build a massive bonfire around which they drink and dance and chant  ¡Viva las candelarias! or Long live the flames! And each December 27 is El Dia de los Innocentes or the Day of the Children. On that day Puerto Rican men dress as women and women dress as men; the community then celebrates as one large group. (Green) Many Puerto Rican customs revolve around the ritual significance of food and drink. As in other Latino cultures, it is considered an insult to turn down a drink offered by a friend or stranger. It is also customary for Puerto Ricans to offer food to any guest, whether invited orShow MoreRelatedWhat Are Financial Journal Entries634 Words   |  2 PagesWhat are financial journal entries? The types of abuse suffered by somebody living in a violent relationship could be emotional, physical, sexual, financial or psychological. Domestic abuse can occur during and after a relationship. Gay Marriage Free Essays

When I say â€Å"marriage,† what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the cake? The bride? The ring? Does main Government Issue cross your mind? I bet it didn’t at all. It doesn’t seem like that would be a main issue since marriage is legal in America everywhere you go. But once â€Å"same-sex† or â€Å"Gay†, is in front of the word, a heated debate begins to arise, and a fight for equality around the states being to erupt. We will write a custom essay sample on Gay Marriage or any similar topic only for you Order Now Gay Marriage is right up there with War, Health Care, and Immigration. The United States have been in discussion about Gay Marriage for years now, and the moment you think the issue is resolved and fixed, a Politician brings it back into play. Gay Marriage is an issue that continues to progress because a President finally admits that they support it, Connecticut is one of the first three states to approve it, and other states continue to appeal the decision. Marriage is a basic civil right, and whatever you believe is what you believe. Gay Marriage laws will affect people of heterosexual marriages also. Being Gay is a choice and something you decide. In certain Religions, being Gay is an abomination and would never stand up in a court of law. This presentation will be useful because it will give the audience a good understanding of what is going on and why this is all happening. This speech will be well educated, but also very understanding. Now in 2004, the Connecticut case took place when eight same-sex couples were denied marriage licenses by the town of Madison. They sued, saying their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process were violated. Connecticut legalized marriages of same-sex couples on November 12th, 2008. Connecticut was the third state to do so after California and Massachusetts. The ruling of four to three, came in just weeks before Californians go to the polls on a historic gay-marriage ballot question. The first time the issue will be put before voters in a state where same-sex couples are legally wed. This is the first time that a state that had willingly offered an alternative to marriage was told by a court that civil unions aren’t enough to protect the rights of gay couples. Connecticut was the first state to voluntarily pass laws to affirm civil unions. In the majority opinion, Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote that denying marriage to same-sex couples would create separate standards. â€Å"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice. † The Family Institute of Connecticut, a political action group that opposes gay marriage, called the ruling outrageous. â€Å"Even the legislature, as liberal as ours, decided that marriage is between man and a woman,† said executive director Peter Wolfgang. â€Å"This is about our right to govern ourselves. It is bigger than gay marriage. † These people who I have quoted are highly respected within the Government in Connecticut. In some certain place, they know someone close to them who has had to deal with situations within this debate. This topic has been very controversial, and it has taken a toll on the people who are the ones being criticized, possibly someone within a political action group. And those are the Gays, Lesbians and Bisexual. These group of people have been treated unequally throughout the years. Fighting to become married with their loved ones, and never succeeding in the past years made each and every one of them who they are today. Having the decision to become gay or lesbian is all about your preference and choice. Being with that someone of the same-sex, in a conscious state of mind, and having the label as being married means more than a Government Law. It means believing in what you believe in as a person and doing what some say was impossible to do. Marriage is a process that seems difficult, but as a heterosexual couple trying to get married, it is pretty simple. So why is it that when â€Å"Gay† is put in front of marriage it becomes a heated debate and can never be resolved? Certain religious groups feel that same-sex marriage should not be allowed in Connecticut, and protestors believe the same thing. They believe this debate should not be resolved and if it is it should be illegal in not just Connecticut, but in the entire United States. Justice Peter T. Zarella wrote that he believes there is no fundamental right to same-sex marriage, and the courts majority failed to discuss the purpose of marriage laws, which he said is to â€Å"privilege and regulate procreative conduct. † Zarella also added, â€Å"The ancient definition of marriage is that as a union of one man and one woman has its basis in biology, not bigotry. If the state no longer has an interest on the regulation of procreation, then that is the decision for the legislature or the people of the state and not this court. † Some groups even take it a step further to say, Gay Marriage caused the mass shootings in Connecticut. James Dobson, who in 2010 retired from a Christian conservative group he founded in 1977 called â€Å"Focus on the Family,† told listeners of his â€Å"Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk Show† that the massacre at Sandy Hook was a result of Americans turning their back on God. Now to President Obama, as he went to Sandy Hook and showed his appreciation towards that situation, our own President believes Gays should have the right to be able to be married to each other. President Obama became the first sitting president to announce his support for same-sex marriage. At first, Obama was sensitive to the fact that to a lot of the people, the word marriage, was something that evokes very powerful decisions, religious beliefs, and so forth. But over the course of time as he talked to friends and family, when he thinks about members of his own staff who are in committed same-sex relationships, who are even raising kids together, at a certain point he concluded that for him personally, it is important to him to go ahead and affirm that he believes same-sex couples, should be able to get married. Before same-sex marriage laws were passed in Connecticut, some laws made it unfair towards people who are in same-sex relationships. For example, when person one goes to the hospital because he is sick, only someone who is married, or is family is allowed to visit, and find out certain information about the patient. So if person number two is in a same-sex relationship with person one, they did not have the ability to visit person one. Strictly because they were not married, because they couldn’t. And Obama believed certain aspects, such as that one, weren’t equal to gay and lesbian relationships. These gay and lesbian relationships are happening all over the world and the community will continue to rise. The US Government is one of the only decision makers when it comes to such high priority cases like these. Legalization will either continue to grow, or it will stop. People’s beliefs are their own, and once a person believes they can do something it is hard to stop them. Especially in a situation like this. Religious groups and protestors will do their best to prevent from Gay Marriages from happening. While President Obama continues to endorse his opinion and support to same-sex marriages. Now that you have heard me speak to you about this and are more aware of the situation at hand, where will you stand? How to cite Gay Marriage, Papers Gay Marriage Free Essays 1. Gays and lesbian want rights Just like everyone else like marriage. Gay marriage is important to the gay and lesbian community to make them feel equal, have the benefits like others and be socially accepted. Equal Rights In February 2014, Arizona government introduced SHABBY. SHABBY is a bill that would allow business owners in Arizona to legally deny service to same sex couples by citing their religious beliefs. Governor Jan Brewer vetoed SHABBY, Brewer citied â€Å"unintended and negative consequences† (Broody, 2014 peg. 56). Equal rights is a given right, well not exactly. If someone falls into a certain group or community, like the gay and lesbian community, their rights are very limited. Marriage is one of those rights that the gay and lesbian community does not have. Marriage is a human right which should be allowed for everyone and not discriminate others. Benefits Benefits plays a major role in gay marriage, not only for finances but medical wise. For example there is a gay couple, not married because the state does not allow it, and one of them becomes very ill and passes away. Well the other partner does not have any rights to claim his partner’s body, his partner’s family does. The partner can not even plan the funeral or even keep anything that was his partner’s. Sometimes this is the case because their family never liked their child being with the same sex, so they punish their child’s partner by doing so. So having that title as being married is very important. Most Jobs you have to be married to receive your partner’s benefits but how if the state will not allow them to marry. In an article it states, â€Å"The Defense of Marriage Act by the Congress of the U. S. Prevents the same-sex partners from receiving benefits† (Passe, 2012 peg. 459-472). This is Congress denying benefits, their rights to gays and lesbians. Social Acceptance When society see two guys holding hands or even kissing, they call them names, throw things at them, give them dirty looks or even worst cases kill them. Now it is kind of different when people see two girls hold hands or even kiss. Society views says and lesbians as a disgrace, they look down on them like they are not even humans. Gays and lesbians Just want to walk and hold hands without the fear of society showing negative behavior. â€Å"Although sharply divided, public attitudes toward gays and lesbians are rapidly changing to reflect greater acceptance, with younger generations leading the way (Harms, 2011). † Gays and lesbians have seen a change in society, society is a bit more accepting than how it used to be slowly but surely. Conclusion The gay and lesbian community has overcame struggles to get to where they are at today, but still going through more struggles. The importance of gay marriage is equal rights, benefits and being socially accepted. There has been much controversy on the subject of gay marriage. Obamas recent outspokenness on the issue has made the subject of whether or not gay marriage is appropriate pop up again in the news and media in 2007, when he said â€Å"I do† to gay marriage a lot of people that have strong anti-gay feelings. I believe that people should be able to get married no matter what sexual orientation they are, because love comes in all shapes and sizes. We will write a custom essay sample on Gay Marriage or any similar topic only for you Order Now According to The National Opinion Research Center in 1973 the people that believed that gay sex was â€Å"always wrong† was a shocking 73%. And from then till 1990 the percentage rose another 3% to an all-time high of 76%. But soon after in the beginning of the 21st century that number has dropped sixteen points down to 60%. It fell another six points in the following two years. After Obama’s speech in 2007 the number fell again dramatically to a record low of 35% of people. On the other hand in 1996 Gallup found that the number of people that supported same-sex marriage was 26% of people and in 2003 that number has risen to 39%. I believe that gay marriage should be allowed because it is the people’s personal decision whether or not they wish to get married to a person of the same sex. I believe they should not be discriminated against, and I think that they should have the same rights as all people because we as a people are all equal. People argue that marriage is a contract in which a man and a woman are to spend the rest of their lives together, until death do they part. They say because it says between a man and a woman it is against god’s word for people of the same sex to engage in intercourse and get married. Well I say the hell with what was written over two thousand years ago the times have changed and I think people need to get with the fucking times you bigoted assholes. Social conservatives may have lost on gay marriage as soon as they started debating it, because of heterosexuals and the sexual revolutions. â€Å"The religious right barnstormed the nation warning against ‘gay marriage’ – with an odd result. For both straight and gay folks, the phrase was transformed from an oxymoron into a real possibility. † As the liberal journalist E. J. Graff has written in the Boston Globe. A lot of homosexual married people have adopted kids even though the social conservatives are strongly against it. I believe that they gay community should be able to get married and have a family, even though there are many people out there that think having two women or men cannot raise a child properly. They argue that you have to have a man and a woman to be to raise a kid properly. The way I look at it is what is better for a kid, sitting in the â€Å"system† waiting for someone to adopt them or maybe they just float through the system for year and years? Or is it better for a child to be adopted by a loving gay couple that will give them the love and caring that they need. I believe that if a couple is truly in love that they should be married regardless of sex, color, or race. There should be no reason that people that truly love each other should be stopped from showing that by getting married. And they should be able to have children whether it is by artificial insemination or adoption. We as a people should not have the right to dictate how others should chose to live their lives, and I believe that we should allow anyone to do what they choose. Intimate Apparel Synopsis free essay sample

The character I really tried to focus on while watching Intimate Apparel was George, the man from Panama. I thought he was the best actor on the stage that night, but that’s not saying too much. For the first half of the play, the actor performed a monologue with the spotlight solely on him. After the break, the actor participated in scene work with multiple characters. George in the storyline is a man who works a very physically demanding job digging canals in Panama. He one day decides to write a letter to Ester, the unmarried woman who works with fabrics, and he immediately takes a liking to her. They exchange letters for about six months and then it happens- George sends her a letter proclaiming his love and asks Ester to be his wife. She replies and says she would love to; he comes a few weeks later for the wedding. Over time, they got closer due to their proximity but emotionally they grew distant. George doesn’t seem to be the romantic that Ester had originally talked to. Also, she finds out that he has been cheating on her. He ends up taking her money and leaving Ester. There were a lot of good things that the actor did throughout the course of the play that I have been taught to do as well. He knew his lines for the most part, his inflection changed at appropriate times, and he used a lot of good hand motions and other gestures. Also, in the first half of the play (before the intermission), the actor played a roll in which he was very romantic and sweet. When he recited the letters, he was able to come across as a very well together and in love man. I genuinely thought he was being sincere and true to Ester. Later in the play, George became very distant and withdrawn. He became a cheating man without morals, who was selfish and inconsiderate. The actor was able to portray two different extremes in the same play, and he did a pretty good job making the transition. I think this would be hard to accomplish, but he was effectively able to do so. Another effective part in the play was the anger the man who played George was able to show. At the scene in the bedroom talking to Ester, he stomped around, making a certain amount of noise without drowning out his own vocals. Throughout the journey of the theater performance, he made a lot of hand gestures and facial expressions that showed me how he felt; he let me feel his emotions. With that said, George didn’t have a flawless performance. For the most part, I thought it was poor acting; but he did well relatively speaking as I addressed above. With that said, it was hard to understand him half the time. At certain parts it seems he wasn’t exactly sure of his lines. He stuttered at parts that didn’t call for stuttering; it wasn’t apart of the script. That just comes down to memorization. Additionally, the actor lost the role at one point, letting out a smirk mid-scene. That smile kind of threw the audience; actors must be in character at all times. Physically, the actor made the audience believe he was a physically worn man. From the clothes he wore to his whole demeanor. His facial expressions showed exhaustion; while speaking from Panama, his voice was strong but tiresome and showed uncertainty. When he came to the contiguous United States, his physical appearance changed. Although he was not in Panama any longer, his true roots came out in the way he spoke and the heavy accent he placed on his words. George became better dressed and modernized; this led to an emotional change as well. Emotionally speaking, in the beginning of the play George was such a smooth talker; he was a sweetheart who was very persuasive and manipulative. The inflection George had in his voice was very sincere. He showed his charm and passion through the words in his letters (even though they turned out to not be his own words). Regardless, he made Ester fall in love with him and want to see him. He seemed genuine. In person though, he wasn’t so loving. George showed his heartlessness and rudeness in his cheating and dialect towards Ester. He showed anger by the way he stomped about the bedroom and stormed out of rooms. He showed his impatience by the way he knocked at the door, so hard and so loud. There were subtle things that could’ve been done better, but the emotion was attempting to be displayed. Intellectually the actor had a few different motives. The first half of the play the audience thought George was all about love and being Ester’s husband. After the intermission, his true colors came out and he became a money hungry hustler. Throughout the play, the character George had many different emotions and types of person he had to show. The actor did a pretty decent job with his faces and body language that he performed. I thought overall, he did an okay job and the play was interesting. I enjoyed watching the storyline play out, though the acting could’ve been much better. It seemed as though the performers were not prepared to act in front of an actual audience. With that said, I look forward to seeing other productions in the future.
